He could never catch the stars. He waited for the pool of water to calm and tried again but the stars squiggled and distorted. They returned back into the same pool and teased him until he thought of giving up. His hands were wet and cold.

“What are you doing out here?!” His brother ran up to him. “You shouldn’t be outside at night. Shadows will get angry with you and take you away.”

The boy ignored him and pointed down at the small pool formed at the foot of the tall grass. “Can you catch the stars in here, Kai? Can you please catch the stars?”

Kai shrugged and looked around. The murkiness of night sheltered the every color and sound. This wasn’t the hour for humans, it never was. But looking deep into the shower of glints high above and the sympathetic moonlight that softened the landscape, he thought again.

“All right, just this time.” He kneeled down and softly took hold of the stars into his hands. “There you go.”

He looked down at the collection of stars in his brother’s hands and picked several. As he tried, the glints of light fled his small, boney hands and floated into the sky.

“Come on, let’s go in. The stew’s getting cold.”

Kai began walking back to his house, and his little brother followed his steps soon after.
